South African knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo, founder of the Maxhosa brand, has been commissioned by New York City's Museum of Modern Art to create a unique jersey for their latest exhibition, due to open for the public next month.
According to the museum, Laduma was included in the Is Fashion Modern? exhibition – which features 111 objects from around the world – because of his design's "profound impact on the world over the last century".
Laduma was commissioned by the museum in particular to create a jersey inspired by the Aran jumper, a knitwear style that originated in western Ireland many generations ago, and has since been reproduced around the globe.
The young knitwear designer, who was born in Nelson Mandela Bay, has found immense success around the world of late, appearing on runways at all the major fashion weeks, seeing stars such a Beyonce celebrating the designer's unique creations.
Xhosa beadwork inspired the first designs created by Ngxokolo, and has since come to inform his whole label, which is stocked in stores around the world.
